This Post is based on a question we received via email regarding “last minute exam tips”. We are posting our response in hopes that it might help other Florida Bar Exam test takers.
Question:
“Do you have any last minute exam tips that you could share?”
Answer:
“As for last minute exam tips, at this point, the best possible advice we can give you is to be sure to take some time to rest your mind. The less clouded your mind is, the clearer your answers will be.”
Remember:
1. For the multiple-choice questions, you are not necessarily looking for the “right” answer; you are looking for the “best” answer.
2. If Evidence is tested in multiple-choice format on Part A of the exam, be sure to answer the questions pursuant to the Florida Evidence Code and not the federal code. When it comes to Evidence, the Florida Board of Bar Examiners seem to allot 2 picks for Florida law, and 2 picks for federal law. You can easily rule out the 2 federal law picks, unless the facts or call of the question specifically state otherwise.
3. For the essays, first read the “call of the question”. Make note of the specific issues you are being asked to address. Then, skim through the fact pattern. Make note of names, dates, locations, times, etc. Then, re-read the call of the question, and then re-read the fact pattern with diligence and focus. From there, make a concise outline of the main issues, sub-issues, and applicable rules of law you will be discussing. Determine how you will “set up” your essay prior to actually writing it (very important for organizational purposes).
4. Within the text of your essay, be sure to clearly state the issue(s), your rule of law statements, and a concise conclusion for each issue. With your application, be sure to argue the facts in relation to the specific rule of law that you are addressing. Be an objective advocate for all parties. You earn more points this way.
5. Stay within the allotted timeframes so you do not run out of time. For each essay question, you have 1 hour to complete it; for each multiple-choice question, you have 1.8 minutes to answer it.
We hope this information proves helpful. We also hope the best for each one of you who will be taking the February 2016 Florida Bar Exam.
