How Do I Read the Scores?

The “mean raw score” indicates the combined average score for all first-time test takers who sat for that particular exam. For instance, the average raw score for the July 2015 Florida Bar Exam Contracts/Ethics essay question was 48.7 points. The average raw score for the Criminal Law, Constitutional Criminal Procedure, and Juvenile Delinquency/Ethics essay question was 40.4 points. Surprisingly, the average raw score for the Torts/Ethics essay question was only 39.5 points.

The “range raw score” indicates the lowest number of points received to the highest number of points received for that particular subject. For instance, the lowest essay score for the Contracts/Ethics question was 3 points; the highest essay score was 90 points. The lowest essay score for the Criminal Law, Constitutional Criminal Procedure, and Juvenile Delinquency/Ethics essay question was 0 points; the highest essay score was 85 points. The lowest essay score for the Torts/Ethics essay question was 0 points; the highest essay score was 83 points. So on and so forth for the multiple-choice subjects.

A “perfect raw score” speaks for itself. It is the highest possible grade awarded for a particular subject. For example, a perfect raw score for each essay is 100 points; a perfect raw score for each multiple-choice question is 30 points.

How Do the July 2015 Raw Scores Compare with the February 2015 Raw Scores?

Comparatively speaking, the July 2015 Florida Bar Exam first-time test takers seemingly performed better on the multiple-choice subjects than that of the February 2015 Florida Bar Exam first-time test takers (see February 2015 Raw Scores). Contrariwise, the February 2015 Florida Bar Exam first-time test takers seemingly performed slightly better on the essays than that of the July 2015 Florida Bar Exam first-time test takers. However, absent Florida Procedure and Wills and Administration of Estates, given that the February and July 2015 Florida Bar Exams consisted of different questions and subjects, it is relatively difficult to make an accurate comparison. Maybe February 2015’s sixty-four percent overall pass rate versus July 2015’s sixty-nine percent range raw scores speak for themselves?
