The July 2013 Florida Bar Exam pass/fail results were released on Monday, September 23, 2013, and were published on the Florida Supreme Court’s website.
The Court also released some exam statistics based on information provided to it by the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. The Board, however, only released stats based on first-time test-takers and did not account for exam repeaters. We were interested in knowing more comprehensive results, so we decided to undertake the boring and arduous task of counting the court’s 17 pages of published pass/fail PDF’s. We compiled some statistical datum which we wanted to share with our regular website visitors.
At the outset we must tell you that we did not scour through the PDF’s with a fine tooth comb. This is what we usually do when providing our readers with any type of exam data (viz., we thoroughly scour through our research prior to publishing our info), especially when it comes to exam statistics. With this particular endeavor, however, please understand that our calculations are approximates. We do not profess to have iron clad information here. We simply counted the numbers and did some math.
Further, please understand that the overall exam stats might seem a little weird. The main reason for the weirdness is that we can only go on the numbers published on the court’s website. If you take a few minutes to look at the 17 pass/fail PDF’s (or Word documents), you will see that not every examinee took Part A and not every examinee took Part B. Some examinees’ scores reflect the Individual Method and some examinees’ scores reflect the Overall Method. Combine those factors, including any variables we did not take into consideration, with the fact that the bar examiners did not include an overall pass/fail status for every examinee, and the end result when it comes to providing some semblance of statistical datum is nothing more than mere approximates. With that being said, here are some July 2013 Florida Bar Exam result statistics.
PART A, The Florida Section
According to our calculations, there were approximately 3376 examinees who took Part A. Approximately 2478 examinees passed, and approximately 898 examinees failed. This means that approximately 73.4 percent of the examinees who took The Florida Section passed it, and approximately 26.6 percent failed it.
PART B, The MBE
According to our calculations, there were approximately 3578 examinees who took Part B. Approximately 2482 examinees passed, and approximately 1096 examinees failed. This means that approximately 69.3 percent of the examinees who took The MBE passed it, and approximately 30.7 failed it.
Overall Pass/Fail Status
Again, according to our calculations, there were approximately 3410 examinees who took either Part A or Part B of the exam, or who took both Part A and Part B of the exam. Approximately 2449 examinees passed, and approximately 961 examinees failed. This means that approximately 71.8 percent passed the overall exam, and approximately 28.2 percent failed it.
July 2013 First-Time Test Takers
According to the Florida Board of Bar Examiners, there were 3073 examinees who took both Parts A and B for the first time. The Board reported that 2373 examinees passed, indicating that 700 examinees failed. This means that 77.2 percent of the examinees who took both Parts A and B of the exam for the first time passed it, and 22.8 percent failed it.
Summary
Part A, The Florida Section
Approximately 73.4 percent passed, and 26.6 percent failed.
Part B, The MBE
Approximately 69.3 percent passed, and 30.7 percent failed.
Overall Pass/Fail Status
Approximately 71.8 percent passed, and 28.2 percent failed.
First-Time Part A and Part B Test-Takers
77.2 percent passed, and 22.8 percent failed.
Final Note
If you happened to count all 17 PDF’s or Word documents and derived at different numbers, let us know. We will certainly consider revising the stats; however, we are definitely not willing to recount the pass/fail documents. Like we said at the outset, we compiled the datum so we could have a better insight into the overall pass/fail rate than that which the Board provided. If you’re a Florida bar applicant, we hope you find the datum helpful. Kind regards.
